BALTIMORE, MD—Today, FutureCare Health & Management hosted an event for resident Gwendolyn Johnson to recognize all she has done for her community. Ms. Johnson is 98 years old and has been on the board of Maryland Legal Aid for 51 years, where she held the position as Vice Chair for well over a decade. Although she is stepping down as Vice Chair, she plans to continue working with the organization as a board member. Friends, family and colleagues of Ms. Johnsons’s were in attendance today to show their appreciation for all that she has done.

Johnson’s activism can be traced back to her representing Cherry Hill Baltimore on the state central committee for 20 years. She also worked closely with the Mayor’s office during her career. After being asked to start “Eat Together Baltimore” by William Donald Schaefer, she ran it for many years at the Cherry Hill Senior Center. She volunteered at the Walter P Carter Recreation Center in the 1960s and has been on the board of Legal Aid for 51 years, holding the position as Vice Chair for more than a decade.

“It feels good,” says Ms. Johnson about receiving this honor. “I have been surrounded by people that love me. I guess that is why I can always put my hand out if somebody else needs help. I’m here trying to help them.”

During her career, Ms. Johnson also worked for the Maryland Department of Health Commission on Aging. It required her to visit nursing homes and Assisted Living Facilities throughout Baltimore. This is how she found FutureCare Sandtown and selected them for herself. She was impressed with the FutureCare facility during her work with the Office on Aging and knew she was making the right decision.

Maryland Legal Aid is a private non-profit organization that provides free high-quality civil legal services to low-income people all across Maryland. They handle cases involving a wide range of issues from child custody to criminal record expungements. Their services include representation before federal and state courts, brief advice and counsel, and referrals to other sources of assistance.

“We are incredibly grateful for Ms. Gwendolyn Johnson’s service on the Board of Directors of Maryland Legal Aid,” said Executive Director Vicki Schultz. “We have come together to honor and thank her for her more than 51 years of dedication to our mission and her passionate advocacy on behalf of our clients.”
