Relying on data from ABA Standard 509 Information Reports released Monday, the Law School Admission Council has found that for the incoming law school class of 2022, 36.6% identify as people of color.

Comparatively, students of color comprised 34.7% of the entering class in 2021, 34.1% in 2020, 33.1% in 2019, and 33.3% in 2018, according to a Dec. 20 blog post from the LSAC.

The LSAC also examined percentages by race and ethnicity for the 2022 entering class. It found that 57.7% of the 2022 1Ls are white, 9.4% are Hispanic or Latino, 8.9% are Asian, and 7.8% are Black.

Out of all groups, the percentages of Black and white entering students decreased from last year.

In 2021, the entering class was 59.5% white and 7.9% Black.

“We’ve now had three consecutive years of increases in the racial/ethnic diversity of the incoming law school class and two consecutive years with the most diverse entering class in history,” according to the blog post. “But we still have a long way to go to create a legal profession that reflects the diversity of society and provides full access to justice for everyone.”
