These law schools did best in blog’s ‘omnibus specialty rankings’ based on US News data
The best law school for its showing in specialty rankings by U.S. News & World Report is Georgetown University, according to “omnibus specialty rankings” devised by a law dean.
The Georgetown University Law Center was ranked No. 15 in overall law school rankings by U.S. News & World Report. But in specialty rankings, it tied for a No. 1 ranking for clinical law, received a No. 3 ranking for tax law and tied for a No. 4 ranking for criminal law.
Paul L. Caron, dean of the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, looked at how well law schools did in 13 separate specialty rankings by U.S. News & World Report to put together his omnibus specialty rankings for 100 law schools, which he published at the TaxProf Blog.
The top 10 law schools for their performance in the specialty rankings are:
- Georgetown University (tied for first for clinical law and had an average ranking of 10 in all 13 specialties)
- Harvard University (tied for first for business and corporate law, ranked first for constitutional law, ranked first for dispute resolution and had an average ranking of 17.6 for all 13 specialties)
- Northwestern University (had an average ranking of 19.2 for all 13 specialties)
- The University of Michigan (had an average ranking of 19.3 for all 13 specialties)
- Stanford University (tied for first for intellectual property law and had an average ranking of 19.4 for all 13 specialties)
- The University of California at Berkeley (tied for first for intellectual property law and had an average ranking of 21.1 for all 13 specialties)
- The University of California at Los Angeles (had an average ranking of 21.2 for all 13 specialties)
- New York University (ranked first for criminal law, ranked first for international law, ranked first for tax law and had an average ranking of 21.7 for all 13 specialties)
- Duke University (had an average ranking of 26.8 for all 13 specialties)
- The University of Virginia (had an average ranking of 27.2 for all 13 specialties)
Yale Law School tied for No. 1 in the overall U.S. News & World Report law school rankings. But it got a No. 16 rank in Caron’s omnibus specialty rankings. The University of Chicago Law School, ranked at No. 3 in the overall rankings, was ranked No. 32 in the omnibus specialty rankings.
